Cabin Fever

That was a tense episode! Poor Locke. His whole life spent being beaten down . . .

1. This was the first flashback in a while. The only other one was the parallel episode with Jin’s flashback and Sun’s flashforward. Do you think there is significance to these two characters being the only ones w/ flashbacks?

2. What we learn about Lil Locke:
* He was the smallest baby to survive at that hospital up until his birth.
* His mother, Emily, was having an affair with a man “twice her age.” Anthony Cooper/Tom Sawyer did not seem that much older than Locke’s mom when we met them last season. Is he really Locke’s father? Or could it be someone else?
*Richard Alpert is present at Locke’s birth. It seems the island has been waiting for him to be ready for his whole life.
*John draws a picture of Smokey as a little boy.
*Richard indicates that John has owned items before. Perhaps in a previous life? He is disappointed by Locke’s choice of the knife, but he doesn’t give up on him entirely . . .
* John chooses the vial of sand (island?), the compass, and the knife. He does not choose a mitt, The Book of Laws, the comic.
*John fights his destiny by rejecting the invitation to Science Camp at Mittelos Labaratories. He is beginning to question science.
*He has a Geronimo Jackson poster in his locker.

3. THIS WEEK IN LOST LITERATURE: This one is for Rob and Cyndi – Horace Goodspeed is living the Myth of Sissyphus. He is endlessly cutting down trees.

Great Line #1: “Someone’s been making all that ranch dressing that you like.” -- Locke to Hurley

5. On the boat --
--It would appear that Sayid and/or Des ratted out Michael to Martin Keamy.
--Michael cannot be killed, once again. Again I ask, how does the island decide who it wants to keep alive? What do these people have in common – Locke, Michael, Rose, Ben (?), Claire, Christian.
-- Keamy has a secret file that tells where Ben might be going. Is this a reference to moving the island?
-- Has Keamy made himself a human bomb?
-- They kill the doc who washed ashore previously. That means the island is in the future.
--Des will not leave the boat now that he thinks Penny is coming to get him.
-- Frank tries to avoid going back to the island because he doesn’t want any part of the torching. He gives in because of the crazy-ass Keamy killing people.
--Keamy is apparently on a mission the Capt knew nothing about.

6. THIS WEEK IN BIBLICAL STUDIES:
--When John is born, his mother cries out, “His name is John.” This is a direct reference to John the Baptist’s birth. Does this mean that John will be responsible for “baptizing” the savior of the island? Would that be Jack? Or maybe Sawyer?

7. In the Jungle, the mighty Jungle . . .
--Ben indicates that John is now taking his place as the protector of the island.
--John finds the cabin after digging through the bodies and finding the blueprints.
--When he enters the cabin, he finds not Jacob but (gasp here) Christian! And even more (bigger gasp) Claire! Christian informs him that:
--Aaron is where he needs to be (w/Sawyer)
--He needs to move the island. How will he do this?
--So why is Claire content to be w/ Christian? She seems like she might be hypnotized or something to me.

Do you think Christian is good? Do you think Christian is God?

9. Hurley’s magical powers – he can keep a candy bar in his pocket while running through the jungle, and it doesn’t melt.

10. Greatest line of the night: “Destiny is a Fickle Bitch.” Ben.

11. In a scene that we saw before, Locke is in physical rehab. His nurse explains that he needs to keep trying. Only this time, it is revealed that Matthew Abadon is that nurse. He believes in miracles. He went on a walkabout. He experiences a miracle. He tells Locke that when they meet again, “You’ll owe me.” Spooooooky!

12. Frank drops a sat phone on the beach. Jack thinks it means they should follow them. I think it is for them to be able to hide.

13. Horace was the guy that brought Ben and his dad to the island.

So, who is a bigger badass? Ben or Martin Reamy? Looking forward to your comments. The preview looked awesome, by the way.

Namaste,
Your Loyal Lost Loser

I liked all the action in the episode last night. Thanks for reminding me of Lock's mom and dad from last season... I forgot that we had already met them.

I am very confused about this Christian/Claire in the cabin thing. What happened to Jacob?! And, isn't Claire supposed to raise Aaron. Wasn't she told that she needs to raise the baby?! If that's correct, then why does Christain say that "Aaron is where he needs to be".

And Kate, to answer your question, if I were to be stuck in a jungle with either Keamy or Ben, I'd rather be with Ben. Keamy shows no mercy. Oh, and, is he being affected by the island, or is he just that way?

Until next week,
Kristen

Wow, so much information!
1. connections b/w Jin and Locke - they both remain on the island, they try to change their destiny - Jin leaves his humble beginnings, Locke fights against his strengths. Do I remember correctly that Jin's doesn't know his real father? That his mom was a whore?...
2. I thought it was a younger Christian who delivered Locke. Maybe Christian is Locke's father, too. Maybe he is everyone's father? - see God theory in # 7?
It seems like a lot of characters don't know who their father is.
The smokey picture explains why Locke was never afraid of it.
3. Ironic name "Good-speed" seeing how is not getting anywhere.
7. Claire definitely seemed weird. If she was so content without aaron it makes me seem that she is not herself - she knows that she is supposed to raise Aaron - then it makes me think that Christian is bad - that he is trying to put into play the "bad" future aaron by taking Claire.
12. I think the sat phone is also so that Sayid can call them - didn't he take one with him? How is he going to find the island on that little boat? But, it does seem like the right size to fit 6 people...
- at least Keamy is straightforward - you know exactly what his purpose is - to kick your ass - at all times. Ben is a manipulator and you would always have to guess which list you were on day to day - is he trying to save me/is he trying to kill me/is he just using me to kill someone else? We all know the stress that can cause... He is also self-righteous in his killing- scarier than dealing with a hired gun.
Thanks for the great notes, Kate!

I was looking forward to this episode. We seem to be moving quickly here.

I thought Claire was dead in this episode. After all, it was demonstrated the Locke can see dead people (Horace). But Claire did appear to be strange, almost evil. Something's fishy here, don't you think? I always assumed that Christian lured her to her death. What were those cryptic looks between her and Christian?

Keamy= CRAHY-ZEEEEE.

Re: people who cannot be killed. They all must have a bigger mission, right? What's Rose's though? Obviously people can die on the island... I still miss Charlie. :)

I did like the "Aaron's where he's supposed to be."

My husband missed it last night, so I'm re-watching - and doing some Lost forum searching - here's a good little tidbit I found.
Ben's mother was named Emily, so is Locke's really mother - suggesting they are brothers!!1
Swoosie Kurtz came on pretending to be locke's mother but she was a con.
Other than that - Our Loyal Lost Loser is 5 steps ahead of everyone - especially in the Bible/literature studies! Go LLR!

Hello all (this is a joint post from Evan and Carla)--

Interesting episode! In our continual late viewing of episodes, we just finished the recent one.

Great catch about the shared name of Emily! We missed that. An intersting thing--a while ago, we posted about Joseph (of Technicolor Dreamcoat fame) being Ben's older brother in the Bible. This totally supports that. John is Ben's brother. And Ben's birth killed Rachel (bible mom), but both births were difficult for her I think (could be wrong here; I'm trying to remember my days of Sunday School).

Evan had an interesting idea. What if Aaron is so important because he will be the next one responsible for the island. Perhaps if John had been raised by who he was supposed to be raised by (his mom, Richard, who knows), then he would have reached the island sooner. Maybe Claire has to raise Aaron because if she doesn't he won't be able to help when he is needed. Evan and I disagree on this part. Thinking back to Claire's psychic, Evan thinks he might have gotten her on the plane so that Aaron could end up on the island, though it was earlier than he should have been. I disagree. Though I think Aaron's fate is tied to the island, the important thing was for Claire to raise him, which others also pointed out. Though Christian is a question mark, I think he attempted to get Claire away for good reasons. I just can't think of any. What an unexpected twist though--we thought we'd see Christian, not both of them. Claire definitely seemed odd. For a mom who has been so protective of her child, she seemed far too assured/accepting for her not to be drugged or something odd. I don't think she's dead though. At least I hope not. I've been waiting from the first season, through years of sniveling, simpering Kate and whiny, woe-is-me Charlie, until Sawyer woke up and realized that he hearted Claire. And I'm this close. Darn it, she better live or I'm going to go on black smoke on someone.

It was small, but it bothered me-- It seemed weird that Desmond didn't go with Sayid, but it makes sense with the previews. They needed someone to stay on the boat. Generally, it just felt inconsistent with his character though. Yes, he wants desperately to return to Penny, but he's always tried to help people. He knows the odds here, and he's needed. I thought they could have given him a better reason to stay.

Awards of the Night:
The subtle touch of irony award goes to the choice of music. Great song by Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash, to start the episode of the series about people who are in a plane crash.

You almost got away with it award:
The entire episode goes by until the very end...and then...stupid Kate shows her suprisingly not tear-stained face. We almost made it.

The Three Blind Mice award goes to Larry, Moe and Curly tramping around the jungle looking for the cabin at the start. "I'm following him." "I'm following him." "He's not even in the lead!"

Chuck Norris knows the exact location of both the island and Carmen Sandiego.
